Attard council opposes development behind Villa Bologna

Attard local council has voted unanimously in favour of a motion calling for an open space behind historic Villa Bologna not to be developed.

AD said the motion was moved by Ralph Cassar, an AD councillor, and backed by the PN and MLP councillors.

Mr Cassar moved the motion following information that a decision was about to be taken by MEPA on an application for the development of the area behind Villa Bologna.

The motion was based on two main reasons: that this area of Attard is already densely developed and new building would hide the decorated wall of Villa Bologna.

The council is to inform MEPA of its decision.

Well done Attard Local Council. I am not from Attard, but I can understand the feelings of the residents as I am a Sliema resident and as everybody knows, Sliema is a disaster area. I wish that the Sliema Local Council would also take this attidude together with MEPA who should, by now, have realised that the people will not stand anymore nonsense and are prepared to go far in order to protect the island's surroundings and heritage, whatever is left of it. Good luck to the Attard Local Council, I hope that the other Local Councils will take a leaf out of your book and follow suit.,

It is hugely satisfying to see agreement across the table. But why now and why Villa Bologna? Attard is being ruined piecemeal. To have the Local Council on your side you have to be the owner of a high profile property?

It is about time that the Attard local council realised that all the development is ruining Attard!!! However it is a bit too late now when a lot of villas and terraced houses have already been turned into block of flats!!! A lot of people's lives have been ruined...it is hard to understand the pain!!!!

Well done Attard LC. Not only is it doing what is best for Attard, but it's nice to see a council which can work hand in hand across parties. Makes a change from all the news we hear about councils constantly bickering and arguing according to the party.

Well done Attard Local Council - not only are they doing something to safeguard the environment of Attard, but all three political parties working together is a shining example of working in the genuine interest of the community.

Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar thanks the Councillors for taking up this case so pro-actively; FAA has long maintained that the building up of Ta' Fgieni Square behind Villa Bologna violates many clauses of the policies of the Local Plan. FAA repeats its request to MEPA that the Local Plan zoning map be revised in order to ensure that the square is never built upon.

this is why I gave my vote to AD......that's what a serious candidate is !!

Well done :)

Well done Ralph. AD counts at local level even if it is struggling at national level. Keep up the good work to stop speculators choking citizens with high rise buildings in open areas.

Thank you Mr Ralph Cassar and all the members of the council who voted! Hopefully this move will help save the very few open spaces that are left in Attard.

Well done Ralph Cassar and the Attard Local Council. AD does make a difference.

Well done to all the council! This is what we residents want from you! Let us now all hoep for the best!

I learned recently that MEPA had an application or pre-application to develop Villa Bologna site (villa and gardens) into plots for villas. MEPA seems to have turned down this application. Now that is the MEPA we want.

Good move but I doubt that MEPA will listen. In any case if this area is not built it will directly benefit only a few who live in the immediate vicinity (2% of Attard and not the whole of Attard). So the density argument is fake. The village is becoming one big mess with building works and non-local traffic- not as bad as sliema but we're getting there. For the last 3 years we've had constant building works with numerous craines, unbearably noise and constant dust. Most election candidates who visited during election time expressed concern and in some cases disgust but no one from the local council, mepa or politicans has the willingness to bulldoze a solution. The developers are now too strong to handle.

Steps like these go farther than you think. Proset.

Well done Ralph and Attard Local Council!

Maybe this is one council that can't be bought and doing what's best for their city and not for the individual. Very commendable Attard Council maybe other councils and Mepa will follow your example.
