Christmas comes early for Phase

Christmas, the melancholy of a slipping 2008 and an overwhelming enthusiasm about the upcoming 2009 are the running themes of the second issue of Phase, which will be out with The Times on Saturday.

Co-editors Velislava Hillman and Caroline Tonna managed to bring together a team of writers to deliver opinions, inspiring stories, advice, and investigations.

Phase's career section this issue presents two medical specialists who will enlighten readers about their unique careers.

The education section has dedicated space for SIFE students to voice their objectives and current projects and a correspondent from the University of Malta informs interested students about the advantages Degree Plus offers.

The special researcher this month - Giulia Bugeja - asks whether all graduates are employable in a concise case study and NSTS introduces readers to their institution.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat speak on students' issues, the global economy, their favourite rock band and convey a Christmas message to youngsters.

They were interviewed by Mrs Hillman and student contributor Rebecca Farmer. The main objective was to bring the two prominent leaders closer to the younger community of Malta in order to cast a different light on them in which the younger generation can see better.

Despite the busy period for both politicians (the 2009 budget was fast approaching), Phase received their replies from both and on time. "We greatly appreciated that both leaders found the time and answered our questions. I was told that Dr Gonzi would be typing his answers on his way to an official visit to China.

The whole editorial team at Phase was so excited for having them both in our Christmas issue", Mrs Hillman, managing director of SET Ltd, the publishers of Phase, noted. She deemed it important that the magazine introduces leading politicians to the younger audience in a different way where the age and status gaps are bridged. "Politics are essential to be taken as such by youngsters as much as it is essential that youngsters are taken seriously by politicians", Mrs Hillman said.

Phase also presents its photography winner: Yana Pace Decesare. A whole spread is dedicated to the young and talented artist along with her winning photographs.

The talents' section dedicates space to Andrea Gauci, an ambitious painter, and to successful designer Thea Saliba.

Phase also includes information for readers dedicated to or interested in environmental, religious, IT and social issues.

The extra section this month - Christmas - offers readers many gift ideas.

Mrs Hillman thanked all the readers who sent letters after the launch of the pilot issue in September, saying such correspondence was the motor running Phase.
