This racism issue is being looked at only from the perspective of "white vs black", but in little Malta, rest assured that there is just as much racism in the black vs white camp! Just listen in to their conversations at work sites and you can hear the constant labeling of us a whites. So is this racism? Or is it only us that can be accused as being racist and not vice versa? There is a serious amount of racism against each other too, as many of the different groups here in malta hate each other with a vengence that we cannot understand. A look at the issue in Congo is a point in case. Tribal warfare where people slaughter each other with awesome hatred. Is this not racism at it's most ugly? We are too nieve' in placing this racism burden on our own shoulders for little nothings which usually are just the product of ignorance, nothing more. I ask the goody goodies who rant on this racism issue to go a spend a few years working in the African countries as I have done to do the same, then come back and preach to us about racism.

You people in Malta take this ''RACISM'' stuff overboard.It's like in Malta nobody can say anything about anyone.So what happened to freedom of speech? freedom of opinion? Speak your mind people of malta and FEAR NOBODY.

The comments I read here are well placed, and the connection between this incident and anti-racism laws was to be expected. However, far more important to note is the strain and drain on Malta's resources illegal immigrants continue to place (involving the Hamrun Police, treatment at Mater Dei, etc.). And let us not forget the expense of arresting and prosecuting the perpetrator.

Now here's where the issue of racism comes in: it is a well known fact that Africans from certain countries are intolerant of natives of neighbouring countries (e.g. Somalis vs Ethiopians). So would the racism card come into play in an argument involving a Somali and an Ethiopian? I can just imagine the court-appointed attorney for the accused explaining that the 'incident stemmed from such and such a border skirmish between the two individuals' native countries on such and such a date!

Some comments here are bodering on the surreal! The race or color of the persons should have no bearing at all. If someone stabs/shoots another person, that is a crime...period! Whether the victim is black, pink or green should have no bearing. Otherwise it might be construed to be understood that with this kind of "exchange rate" mentality the life of a black person is more important than that of a white person.

My opinion is that only the REASON would have to be considered. If a person wontonly injures another, that is a crime punishable by Law. If, on the otherhand, a person inflicts injury inorder to defend himself, that is Self Defence.

When one starts including the color or creed of the persons involved there is NO LIMIT where to draw a line!

There are myriad combinations that could be considered as ridiculous or even dangerous.

eg.
If a man stabs a woman; is that a chauvinist crime?
If a Democrat stabs a Republic; is that a political crime?
What if a Government Employee stabs an un-employed person?
Or a lay person stabs a priest?

Come on!

I totally agree with J Scicluna, I wish that the Maltese authorities make something about the overcrowding of these illegal immigrants. We can clearly say that we LOST our BELOVED MALTA because as you can see from the streets everywere you look...you will find gangs of Different Races no matter what colour no matter their origin but everyone tries to make this country a colony of his/her homeland!!

I obviously cannot comment on the case lest I be called racist and punished. But when a 'self invited national guest' strikes another 'self invited national guest' is it racism? It cannot be. What did they call it in Rwanda?

What you write makes sense. But unfortunately it is not like that at all.

Experience has shown that if a white person attacks a black person, the onus of proof that the attack was not racially motivated will be with the accused.

If it is the other way round it will be mitigated with excuses like different culture, under-priveleged background, oppression, psychological reasons, reaction to racism! and so on.

I agree and share your concern with you 100%. My greatest concern is not in a case like this..were the attack was deliberate, but what about an accident? If I would be driving and an immigrant crossed the street and I would run over him by accident..would i be accused of racism??

Whether a stabbing or other crime is a racist case or not has nothing to do with the race of the perpetrator or the victim, but in fact, there must be evidence to show that the crime's motivation was that of racial hatred. If a black man stabs a white man it is a crime, if a black man stabs a white man because he is white, it is a hate crime.

My post was misunderstood. I know that he had an argument with another black person.

The question I am posing is "If that other person had been Maltese instead of African, would it have been interpreted as a racist attack?"

I did say it was a "hypothetical" case, but some rush to retort before they have finished reading the post.

He had an argument with ANOTHER RESIDENT at the centre and was hit with a pointed instrument.......!!!!!!

The article says that the victim had an argument with another resident of the centre so it was not a Maltese National involved.

Can someone enlighten me. If this gentleman had an argument with a Maltese man, and got stabbed, would the new anti-racism laws being contemplated be invoked?

No doubt the first thing which would come up in this hypothetical case would be the race card!
