Harry Vassallo joining Dalli's team in Brussels

Former Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Harry Vassallo is to join EU Commissioner John Dalli's private cabinet in Brussels.

When contacted, Dr Vassallo confirmed the move saying: "I will be moving to Brussels to be a member of John Dalli's cabinet."

The news comes six weeks after Dr Vassallo denied speculation about the move. "It was just too early for me and I hadn't decided yet," he said when asked why he had taken a reticent approach.

Sources said Dr Vassallo, who led Alternattiva for 10 years between 1998 and 2008 on a pro-EU ticket, was among the first invited by Mr Dalli to join his team, following his nomination. Until a few days ago, Dr Vassallo was editor of Media Today's Sunday Maltese language newspaper Illum.

Dr Vassallo, considered to be a moderate, is known to have strong contacts with the Green Group in the European Parliament, which Mr Dalli will be using in his favour particularly due to environment-sensitive issues in his portfolio such as animal welfare and GMOs.

His move to Brussels will complete Mr Dalli's eight-member cabinet, which will be headed by Joanna Darmanin - outgoing Commissioner Joe Borg's deputy chief - and includes former Nationalist MEP candidate Edward Demicoli.

The Commissioner's inner circle will also include a French spokesman and EU fonctionnaires from Germany, Italy, Portugal and Austria.

Mr Dalli will take up his new post on Wednesday, the day after European Parliament is expected to approve the new Commission.

George Abela chosen by Dr Gonzi as President. Now Harry Vassallo, who hated the PN so much before the last election, chosen by John Dalli. It seems that the PN is more of a Moviment tal Moderati after all, Joseph.

Mr.Dalli deserves all the praise for taking such a decision. Dr.Vassallo is a man of great integrity and I believe he is the right person for the job. Pity he was never elected in the Maltese Parliament, he had so much to offer particularly in the environment sector. Good luck Harry.

good luck to Dr.Vassallo

Not bad at all, considering that before the last election this government wanted to arrest you.

A surprising move, though a rather pleasant one. I am sure Dr. Vassallo's experience will prove valuable in helping to secure the best for the enviornment - the only one enviornment which if destroyed will mean the end for everybody irrespective of beliefs or politics.

At the moment it seems in the war Money vs Enviornment, Money is gaining the upper hand!
The Time when money will be the only thing left to eat may not be far off!

This choice certainly took most of us by surprise - but I believe it is the right one. Well done to Mr. John Dalli for his unblinkered approach and open-mindedness. Congrats to Mr. Harry Vassallo whose hard work and constant concern for the environment and other pressing issues has been rightfully rewarded.
I am sure their work together will be beneficial not just for Malta but also for the E.U. The
E. U. needs capable administrators like these two.

Harry has been out of politics for more than eighteen months now. For the past year he has been involved directly in journalism. I see no conflict of interest.

I still believe that John Dalli is the shrewdest politician for taking Harry aboard. I am sure that Harry pays no lip service, and such position requires reliable a assistant who is not afraid to call a spade a spade.

Political appointments and Professional appointments have nothing to do with each other.

On the other hand, Harry`s absence from the local scene has been felt since his departure in 2008.

Good luck!

Well done Dr. Vassallo
Mr Dalli is a balanced politician and it was a wise decision to include Dr. Harry Vassallo in his the team. I have worked with Dr. Vassallo and I know how much he has contributed to Maltese politics and how much energy and diligence he puts in his work.
I have no doubt that he will continue to do so in Brussels. A man of integrity and great capability. AD has lost when Dr. Vassallo left but now the whole nation will be benefiting.

An wise decison by Mr Dalli. Wishing Dr. Vasallo every success in his new post..

Congratulations Harry , i have worked with you for so many years , i know your capabilities, your ethics and your vision and i am sure you will deliver and give to all the Europeans what the Maltese failed to give you a chance to do. Congratulations to Mr Dalli for showing his faith and trust in you, Mr Dalli has proved once again his open mind and chose those best for his team.

Quote 'John Dalli as Commissioner is serving the Commission (i.e. all EU citizens) - not just Malta and less even the PN.' - agree wholeheartedly!!! Pity the majority of people are 1 way track minded. PN or PL. Nothing else. I hold Dr. Harry in very high esteem and I am sincerely glad he was chosen to go to Brussels as part of John Dalli's team. I'm 100% sure his intentions are that of representing - not PN, not PN, not the Greens - but the Maltese people as a whole!!!
J. Borg(on 7/2/10)
It is pertinent to point out to the blinkered PN commentors....

John Dalli as Commissioner is serving the Commission (i.e. all EU citizens) - not just Malta and less even the PN.

In this regard the decisions he takes - including selecting the team who will help him to deliver his services effectively - will be based on the integrity and capabilities of the persons concerned.

Thus in chosing Harry, John Dalli reconfirms his wise and strategic vision - and no nonesense approach to deliver..........maybe some ex-political "peers" in Malta can learn from him!

The ink of his writing against the Govt has barely dried out and yet he was invited to join Dalli's Cabinet. Ghandhom ragun jidhawdu n-Nazzjonalisti. U halluna. Mhux ta' b'xejn sejrin lura bhal granc. Tlifna rasna. Insomma il-lum kulhadd hobzu fil-kus. Imsieken dawn li tant hadmu u stinkaw ghal partit u qatt ma hadu xejn.

Three Cheers to Dr. Vassallo. Finally - a breath of fresh air. I'm glad for you Dr. Harry. Well done. At least you did not try at all costs to get to Brussels or other countries for that matter - you were chosen for your integrity and your capabilities. I'm glad we have you in John Dalli's team.

MLP to PN, AD to PN, PN to PL, ... oh I understand, this is politics!
Robert Callus(on 7/2/10)
Congratulations Harry, you deserve this job. Thanks to John Dalli for not looking only at 'partisan' issues. A hardliner on enviironment issues was badly needed.
GiovDeMartino(on 7/2/10)
Kif rista' ma taqtax qalbek!!!!!!!!!!!!U biex naqtaghha jiien..........
Dion Borg(on 7/2/10)
John Dalli made a brave decision and the right choice for him, Malta and every EU citizen.

Maybe this wider perspective and co-operation towards working to be effective in citizen's real ultimate benefit, rather than the fixation with political parties' short-term interest, would instigate an overdue change in mentality and practices in our local political scene!

A true revision of the Electoral Law would be a good start.....

Your enemy is my friend i see, politics in this country never ceases to amaze me.

Scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.
