Michael Mifsud signs for Valletta

Striker Michael Mifsud is to return to the Maltese Premier League, having signed for Valletta, who top the table jointly with Birkirkara.

Mifsud had been without a club for some months, having played in England for Coventry and Barnsley.

He however, has played for Malta and scored against Finland in the friendly game last week.

It is a tragic news for me,that a player such as Michael, haven,t signed with a foreign club.In my opinion Michael belong in the english premiere league, and not in a local club.I, think his dream is fading now,in joining Valletta fc.

The truth is that everyone ran after Michael to sign up for him but our king MR SCIRIHA knocked you down and all moaners are sour grapes, so I invite you tonight at 19.30 for the presentation.

when we read about foreign transfers we are giving a detailed news how much was the transfer and the new player new salary and bonuses.here we read that michael mifsud has signed for valletta but we dont have the details of the transfer.can some valletta city committee illuminate us about it?lets hope that we dont end the same way that it ended when mr joe caruana curran went on a spending spree to keep certain players happy.

So Why Real bought Ronaldo when they had just bought Kaka? Why United loaned for just two months Laarson a couple of years ago? Simple they wanted to strengthen their squad. Valletta already have a formidable squad but we all were a bit worried with the loss of Ian since then we only had O`brien to cover Terrence as a pure striker. So we signed Michael. What is so scandalous in this deal? For those who say we do not respect our past players...they really do not know the Valletta folk. We always have shown great respect to every player that gave his heart out for our glorious shirt. Come next weekend all Malta will now have a chance to see Michael playing with the mighty Whites! Make us PROUD! To all moaners just get some valium and get stocked on laxatives!
Ryan Bugeja(on 10/3/10)
A player's abilities are measured on the pitch. Players' attitudes are measured on and off the field. Something doesn't quite look right in all this. A player of such calibre on field cannot be rumoured with so many teams while out of action for 7 months without there being some kind of attitude issues of field. I don't know Michael personally. But from what I saw on Sunday's Replay... Michael's reaction to Heese's comments... seem to have touched some weak spot in Michael's character, or sparked some truth which he didn't surely expect on a Sunday evening...
In any case, good luck to Michael and hope this transfer will prove me and anyone else wrong, especially when it comes to the National Team.
Keith Muscat(on 9/3/10)
city oh city...qed tibzaw mit-tigra?

what's similar between man.city and valletta city?
they both end up with 'City', they buy prima-donna players and they're both RIDICULOUS!
Charles Zahra(on 9/3/10)
what is the problem with all you moaners here. so yes Valletta managed to sign Micheal why didn't your favorite teams try to sign him during these last months. Just sour grapes as i see it. make us dream more micheal , it seems that most of the so called football supporters would have prefered to see you end your season without a club rather than play for Valletta, well pity for them and good for valletta you chose with your mind the best way to show your class.
good luck Micheal and thanks Valletta fc
ACCristina(on 9/3/10)
I cannot believe how Valletta invested in such a player with such outrageous wages for such a short span of time.

i think that valletta has got the best squad in years and we all talk how the best players on the island are being used as substitutes or even not called, and still Valletta keeps buying top players.

I read some comments about team investments. i think that Valletta is not completely on the right track. The whole club turns around Mr.Schriha, having him pump large sums of money into the club. What happens is Mr.Scriha leaves ? What happens if he starts having financial difficulties ? what would be the future of the club if it is surrounded by large debts because of long term contracts ?

i think that the VFC committee is not considering these scenarios and only considers the winning of trophies and leagues.

on the other hand is it worth it to spend all those thousands when Valletta are of the same level of points with Birkirkara, a club which spends a lot less than Valletta.

I think that Valletta are lacking good thinking and marketing in their club for long term sustainability,
P Saliba(on 9/3/10)
Seems like there's a lot of sour grapes out there.....

Dont worry my friend. Be assured that things at our club are very well being done. You know nothing about our club, you are not a Valletta supporter. As i said all players are paid up to date. I cant understand your worries.

Yeah B;Kara have invested hugely in young players like Branko Nisevic you know. Both teams have a great mixture of young and experienced players, Gilbert on one side, George Mallia on the other, young players, Steve Borg on one side, Pulo on the other. Its a balanced affair and I don't see why it shouldn't be so.
Why all you moaners are complaining, what if he joined B'Kara? Would you say all the stuff you said?

I dont follow maltese f/ball, but is there no signings on window in malta like in the uk?
This has nothing to do with micheal signing for Valletta, just a curious question.

Micheal Mifsud you have a team now ...my Valletta FC....thats great and i wish you and the team much success....but i was hoping you would be in the EPL ....something happened with the Coventry and Bristol deal and the EPL shunned him after that ...i hope Micheal cam make amends with the EPL team managers ...i think it was greed and bad advise from his agents ...is soltu ....fame goes to our heads and we are not humble about what god has given us ....Micheal i wish you the best and i hope you score plenty of goals for VFC....if you dont ??????
M. Catania(on 9/3/10)
I would have wished that Michael plays for a foreign club because most of the time he has proved himself. For me Michael can play in any league but anyway it's his preoragtive whom to play for or not. I think that his lingering in choosing a club has unfortunately worked against him this season. I don't support anyone in particular, so may the best team wins!!!!
MARIO CAMILLERI(on 9/3/10)
dear michael, the city supporters will call you brother until your first false move, afterwards they will treat you like dirt. talk with all the ex valletta players
J Bajada(on 9/3/10)
@ Drury
I heard he signed till the end of the season, therefore he will be free again and can join any other club for next season, even foreign ones.

I don't support any particular Maltese team so I won't talk in favour of anyone. Valletta, with all the great players they have, should have already wrapped up the title, however they are still equal on points with Bkara. Now, they even signed Mifsud. I don't think it's good for maltese football. Besides all this, I don't believe that they would fare well in Europe as well, at least I would expect such a team to try to go through the first round! The Floriana team comes to mind, they had some great young players (Etienne Barbara, Trevor Cilia, Shaun Bajada, JP Mifsud Triganza, George Mallia, Stephen Wellman, William Camenzuli, Ian Azzopardi, Rueben Gauci, Manolito Micallef, Angus Buhagiar...) but ended up selling all of them, thus failing to improve their position in maltese football in these last years. Had they kept all those players, i'm sure they would've gone on and win the league sometime. But now it seems such a thing won't happen in the coming years for them.
Charles Cachia(on 9/3/10)
Dear Michael , I think that you have chosen the best club in Malta .Well done brother.
M Borg(on 9/3/10)
Well to make you more sad...it is not 10 games...but 8 games till the end of the season!

Do you all remember when President Scriha said that Mifsud will never play with a team of his (when at that time Mfifsud preferred Arrigo's better offer) ---- well I guess the prospect of not winning an honour for the second successive season with his 'superstar' team made him change his mind... waste of money!
david vella(on 9/3/10)
Mickey is a real good player who has proved his worth! He's no 40 yr old, he's at his best age as a footballer to reach maturity so to my mind he can still join a competitive club abroad! It's not over yet! Show them MIKE. If I were Benitez I'd sign him at Liverpool the way things are going, Sadly to say!
James Drury(on 9/3/10)
Does anyone know details of the contract signed by Michael Mifsud? Is it only till the end of the season, 1 year, 2 years?

Just a short note to all you moaners, better playing with a local side rather then staying without a club..

Well done Valletta for your new signing!
Jonathan Spiteri(on 9/3/10)
If Valletta miss out on this year's title...oh my god not even in my wildest dreams!

I just can't understand either of the parties. Valletta have already the strongest squad by far. Is it possible they were still unsure about the fact that their squad is complete, especially upfront!! Maybe they just can't help the fact to see themselves being given a stern challenge by a team that kept itself low profile!

On the other hand, I can't understand Michael Mifsud's choice while at the apex of his career. We were getting used to news of even english premier league clubs showin intereset in him, how could he possibbly end up without a club? Hope one day he would be able to explain, since he is representing our country when he plays for the national team and all national team followers ought to have an explanation in my opinion!

I still believe Birkirkara's policy this season is the best one. Long term investment in future stars. Come on Yellows!!! We believe in our youngsters!!!
k.curmi(on 9/3/10)
I'm happy that micheal finally found a a prestigeus club like our club valletta but I'm sad that with the money that micheal is going to earn for 10 games sounds a little bit exaggerated, hopefully with this move we will win the league! but i have my doubts . vfc 4 ever

a couple of weeks on some local station they said he was close to signing for portsmouth which already sounded strange knowing that they were falling into administration. knew it wasnt true. how does a player said to "be sought by english premier league clubs" end up back in malta?
amifsud(on 9/3/10)
How sad. I wish one day we hear the full story of Michael's incredible fall from highly sought after international player to 6 months+ of being unwanted. It is great to have our best player playing in Malta but when I think of what could have been for Michael it is a very sad outcome. He has now probably lost his chance to become Malta's best player overseas, greater than Buzu was. Look at Bogdanovic...he has made a great name for himself. Why the difference?
Josef Farrugia(on 9/3/10)
Well done City; Now let's show them all that with Michael Mifsud in the team we can do prpare for next year and advance in Europe; I really think that the club should find a really good sponsor and invest now in a world class player. Maybe Ribery or Fabregas. All we need is money, therefore a good sponsor. Maybe one day we will be among the elite in Europe. Forza Valletta City!!!
Kris Scicluna(on 9/3/10)
SHOCKING NEWS! i cant understand what went wrong! last week he was close to signing for porthsmouth (a premier league club in england) and now he signs for valletta??

michael you could have been a maltese legend. but you have ruined your own career. i cant believe it. what a pity.
Noel Hili(on 9/3/10)
Prosit Mr. Sciriha. Well done for the signing of a very good talented MALTESE player. It's a pity having a player like Michael not playing in any club. At least the local league viewers will see this talented player much more often than when Maltese National Team plays. And for those people moaning about Valletta signing him, why didn't any other club sign him? He was available for quite some time after leaving Barnsley. So, it would have been better if a Maltese club signed such a talent. And in this case, it happened to be Valletta. So what's the fuss all about. It's enjoyable to see Michael play on a Maltese Pitch. Anyone recalls his 2 goals at Old Trafford in the league cup 2 years ago?
duncan Tanti(on 9/3/10)
He maybe the best player on the island and valletta Maybe the strongest squad on paper but everyone knows what happens when you have a team full of prima donnas which are after the paycheck.................Come on yellows.Always behind you even if we dont win the league. You are still doing your utmost.nobody said we are going to be in this position at the start of the league but we showed everyone that with a team of capable youngsters and a good coach we can do it.
C. Bonnici(on 9/3/10)
It is unbelievable how a player who was once linked with a possible Man Utd move finds some space only in the tiny Maltese championship. With all due respect to Maltese football, our local league should be the showcase for such young players and once they get the exposure and get off the island, the country should invest in these sportsmen to keep their rank and why not improve it! Is it possible that Michael Mifsud didn't find a manager to scout for him a decent club in Europe? How come such a talent gets off our shores and returns just few years later when he is still at a relatively young age?

I have been following this saga ever since I got to know that Michael is without a club and unfortunately my fears came true with Michael having to return back to our island. As a Hibernians supporter I can now envy the Citizens for the signing and perhaps hope that Michael would embark soon on another dream adventure, and possibly taking one or two players with him! Good Luck Michael and take care of our goallie Muscat when you come on one to one

A rather sad piece of news. Michael must have very bad advisers he should not have dilly dallied after leaving Barnsley. He still had a few seasons to offer abroad. He has wasted a whole season and at his age now he can forget playing overseas. Shame really.
S.Vella(on 9/3/10)
A few years back when Sliema under the presidency of Robert Arrigo won three premier leagues in a row Valletta fans used to accuse Sliema of "buying" trophies due to the fact that in a couple of years Sliema signed practically all the top players on the island!

Funny how the Valletta fans are not applying the same "accusation" for themselves these days. Still well done city boys with the signing of Michael Mifsud you have practically killed the championship race for years to come.
